Mekong Delta

The Mekong Delta covers an area of about 40000km2 (25000 square miles). One of the world's great rivers, the mighty Mekong empties waters from Tibet 4500km (2,800 miles) away into the South China Sea through the Mekong Delta. This great river crosses into Vietnam from Cambodia and divides into the many rivers that create the Delta (Cuu Long or Nine Dragons in Vietnamese), and nourish one of the worlds greatest rice growing regions, before ending its journey in the South China Sea.

A trip into the Mekong Delta provides an excellent opportunity to experience traditional Vietnamese rural life. Boating through the maze of canals and waterways gives the opportunity to view rural life in the countryside as it really happens: peasants hard at work in the paddy, docile but mightily strong water buffaloes, orchards groaning with delectible fruits, humble thatch-rooved dwellings, ancient Khmer temples, fishermen and everywhere, excited children!

Floating markets: The very essence of river culture

The floating markets are the lifeblood of the Mekong Delta and contribute greatly to its culture and atmosphere. A floating market will spring up anywhere that sellers and buyer happen to meet. Trading can take place for a few minutes or all day, but it is always most exciting in the morning as the buyer's boats are empty and the supplier's boats are laden with their produce.

And the range of produce can be bewildering: from food for special occasions to rambutan, oranges, pomeloes, mangosteen or durian the staple fresh-water fish, turtles, snakes, field crabs or shrimps. Apart from the ad-hoc buying and selling on the backwaters, there are well established floating markets worth seeing at Phung Hiep, Nga Bay, Phong Dien, Cai Rang and Cai Be. The produce offered at the floating markets is usually sold at wholesale for further processing or onward sale in the bigger towns and cities.

Hanoi Capital

Hanoi's wide, tree-lined streets, beautiful lakes, cooler climate and colonial architecture give it a distinctive European feel. Despite this, Hanoi maintains it's Asian culture and strong nationalism.
There is still a strong French influence in Hanoi with some of the older folk still speaking the language and the French influence is also reflected in the availability, as elsewhere in Vietnam, of good food, wine, coffee and baguettes.

Hanoi's Old Quarter is located on the north-eastern shore of Hoan Kiem Lake, which means Lake of the Restored Sword and originates in a legend which tells of the sword being given to the Emperor to drive the Chinese out of Vietnam. After the war, a giant golden tortoise snatched the sword from him while he was out fishing and swam with it into the depths of the lake.

Today, Thap Rua or the Tortoise Tower, is on an island in the centre of the lake, and many beautiful photographs have been taken of it. Early morning is the best time to stroll around the lake and see the locals start their day with a game of badminton, some Tai Chi exercises or just a quiet stroll. A Sunday afternoon walk around any of Hanoi's beautiful lakes can make you feel you are in a Swiss lake resort rather than a bustling, Asian city.

Saigon - Pearl of Far East

Like many cities in Vietnam, Saigon did not escape the wrath of war. Since the beginning, Saigon has had quite a traumatic history. There are many citations to the birth of Saigon and the origin of its name. In the 15th century, this area were swamps, marshes and thick forests. By the early 17th century, a small township was formed. According to one theory, Saigon or Sai Con has its root in a Khmer word Prei Kor (Kapok Tree Forest). The name Saigon was used officially in 1698, when Lord Nguyen Phuc Chu sent Mr. Nguyen Huu Canh to this region to create various districts and to form a government for this southern outpost. Because of its strategic location for trade and commerce as well as military importance, Saigon continued to grow and became a bonafide city. By 1772, Mr. Nguyen Cuu Dam began to fill many of the canals to form streets.

Hoi An ancient town

Welcome to Hoi An - was a very busy commercial port in the 16th and 17th centuries. Merchants from Japan, China, Holland, India etc came to trade. Almost all of architecture: streets, ports, civil and religious buildings are intact. You will experience old customs and cultural activities plus traditional handicrafts and famous local specialties.

Impressions & Feelings
I saw the real Vietnam here in Hoi An. Real Vietnamese who live along the rivers come to Hoi An to buy goods and supplies or to sell them. The buildings in Hoi An are old with many ancient sites and it was a joy to walk around and see them. People were friendly and I was able to easily hire English speaking guides to help me to gather information to make this website. I do however have one complaint. Hoi An is a tourist town and because the tourist area is concentrated to a few streets there are a large handful of loud, rude and persistent vendors, from post card sellers to people (who get a commission) to bring you to a clothes shop. They will try your patience so bring a little extra with you but do not miss this great town because of them.

Hue royal tombs

Welcome to the Hue, Central Vietnam, virtual presentation. The ancient city of Hue was the capital of Vietnam during the Nguyen Dynasty at the beginning of the 19th century. In 1833 the French troops took control of the city. Fortunately, the French protectorate preserved the treasures and the historic integrity of the town.

During the Vietnam-US war some of the the most intense fightings occurred in this region, the Central Highlands. Many constructions were bombed and destroyed during this war. Even so, Hue is still one of Vietnam's highlights. On the following pages, I will give you a preview of the city's main tourist attractions. I will also show you some of the Royal Tombs in the Hue area.

Nha Trang sun & sea

Nha Trang is one of Vietnam's premier seaside resorts. Miles and miles of empty beaches, deserted bays, numerous islands and coral reefs provide opportunity to swim, snorkel and scuba dive. Training and equipment for diving is available in Nha Trang. There are many mid range hotels and one mediterrean style resort in the area. Nha Trang is home to the summer residence of the last Vietnamese emperor, Bao Dai. Ana Mandara beach resort is one of the beauties in Nha Trang with their special designed bungalows, beautiful garden, private beach and nice restaurants and is managed by Pavillion hotels group from Thailand. Today the palace is converted into a hotel.

Seafood restaurants and cafes ring the beach side area and the food is excellent. Quiet beaches can be found minutes from the center of the town. Boat trips to surrounding coastal areas and islands provide another escape for the traveller.

If going to a seafood restaurant isn't to your liking, you can rent a boat and purchase fresh seafood off the coast. Natives have set up "farms" in the middle of the sea. There you can pretty much get any type of seafood your hearts desire. (Their main speciality is lobster.)

Venture a little further and you would see an aquatic preserve and aquarium filled with beautiful ocean wonders. If you don't enjoy that, just go further and come to a resort style beach. There you can rent water crafts or enjoy swimming in the clear aquamarine blue waters.

Dalat - City of love & flowers

Dalat has a long history of being an internal get-away for the residents of Vietnam. It is situated in the mountains, surrounded by valleys, lakes, and waterfalls. The scenery and the cool climate led the French to establish this city in the early 1900s. Today the Vietnamese use it as their retreat, making it the most popular honeymoon spot in the country, but it's also become a stop on the foreign tourist trail.

The main sights in the area are well maintained and are being built up even further. Like many cities in Asia, it wants to be known as a "Paris of the East". To that end, it's building a scaled-down replica of the Eiffel Tower.
Dalat is also famous for its agriculture. Coffee, flowers, and strawberries are grown here.

Sapa Trek - Bac Ha Market

Welcome to misty Sapa with towering magnificent mountains and colourful costumes

Treks from Sapa to ethnic minority villages and surrounding areas are easily arranged. Small groups are often guided by a local minority trekking guide. The diversity of people and dress in this small geographical area makes Sapa an excellent base to interact with minorities and learn about ethnic customs and traditions.

In the Saturday Market hill tribe people from surrounding villages wear their best clothes. On weekdays, a smaller population of ethnic minorities frequents the Market.

Surrounding Sapa are the Hoang Lien Mountains. These mountains include Fansipan, which at 3143 meters is Vietnam's highest. The peak is generally accessible year-round, but don't underestimate its difficulty.
It is very wet and usually cold, so you must be prepared. Fansipan is 19km from Sapa and can only be reached on foot. Sapa is the ideal base to gather information and arrange a trek to the summit.

Mui Ne - Sand & Sea

Welcome to the Mui Ne presentation. Mui Ne is a small fishing village next to Phan Thiet. Both towns are in the Binh Thuan province, 120 miles North of Saigon (200 km). In the town of Mui Ne you will find one of the less spoiled beaches in Southeast Asia. If you are looking for a place to relax away from the noisy and polluted cities in Vietnam, this may be the place for you.

Most foreigners traveling around Vietnam, start their travel in Saigon and go to Hanoi, or vice versa. If you are planning a travel to Vietnam, Muine may be the perfect place to spend two or three days. Long beaches, good restaurants, water sport activities, interesting one day excursions, all these and more, in Mui Ne. On the following pages I will give you a sneak preview of this unspoiled area of Vietnam.
